FAQs

Quick answers to common queries

UV Cabinets & Pro series

Is exposure to radiation possible?
Our cabinets are designed in a way that no UV-C radiation can escape. This is reinforced with IEC 62471 Photo-biological Safety certificate placing Uvisan in the Exempt group – the highest possible safety standard. Additionally, all devices are equipped with a door safety switch preventing accidental light exposure.
Are the cabinets safe?
All the devices have CE, RoHS and IEC 62471 and are certified for Electromagnetic Compatibility in line with Low Voltage Directive. Additionally, our manufacturing processes are in line with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
What testing and certifications does Uvisan have?
CE, RoHS, IEC 62471, Electromagnetic Compatibility/Low Voltage Directive, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, Sterilization Efficacy Evaluation certificate.
Has a laboratory certified that it kills viruses?
Uvisan has third party lab certificate confirming antibacterial efficacy and are using UVGI lamps, which are proven to kill the bacteria, spores, viruses, protozoans, moulds and yeasts.
Has it been laboratory tested?
Our cabinets are lab tested by a third party confirming antibacterial efficacy and are using UVGI lamps, which are proven to kill the bacteria, spores, viruses, protozoans, moulds and yeasts.
How does it work?
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet (ultraviolet C or UV-C) light to kill or inactivate micro-organisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA. This leaves them unable to perform vital cellular functions.
What can I NOT clean in it?
No living creatures or organic materials should be placed inside our cabinets. Other than that, almost every commonly used item can be cleaned. Metals, various plastics, cardboard, rubber surfaces can be safely disinfected in our devices.
Does it meet EU law requirements for this type of equipment?
Yes ( CE, RoHS, IEC 62471, Electromagnetic Compatibility/Low Voltage Directive, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, Sterilization Efficacy Evaluation certificate).
Do you provide a guarantee / support service?
Yes. We have a standard one year guarantee and we provide customer support.
Can it damage what I put into it?
Our cabinets were rigorously tested by both Hewlett Packard and Realwear simulating years of usage showing zero damage or degradation to the materials. The report can be found here. We have also done our own excessive stress testing with various headsets and other popular electronic devices (mobile phones, tablets etc) simulating 1.5 year of standard usage. We observed no impact of the UV-C radiation neither on the appearance nor on functionality.
Do the cabinets create a fire hazard?
All the electric and electronic devices are protected by circuit breaker and RCD module. Also during normal operation, the temperature inside the cabinet is between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the cabinet is made of non-combustible materials (mostly steel).
What weight can the shelves take?
10 kg per shelf is the maximum we recommend.
Do you have technical specifications?

Our spec documents can be found in our download section.

How is the machine calibrated so it always achieves 254nm?
It is specific to the lamp – an electric discharge produces UV radiation in a very narrow band (the is peak exactly at 254nm). There are also small “sidebands” produced in a visible range (over 400nm) – this is the pale blue colour characteristic to all UVGI lamps.
What is the shelf life of the machine? Does it always achieve 254nm over the life cycle? Is there an indicator for this?
The lamps offer almost constant UV-C output over their complete lifetime. The lifespan of our lamps is 9000 hours. This accounts for several years of use, however, we recommend changing the bulbs every 2 years as best practice.
Can the unit be left on overnight?
Yes. Our customers often find it is useful to use the charging ports within the cabinets overnight so their devices are ready to use the following day.

Cleanroom

Can I buy Cleanroom ‘off the shelf’ and install it myself?
Uvisan offers bundles of Cleanroom product components depending on room size, they contain everything you require except the mains wiring, together with instructions on how to wire the component parts, however we suggest a consultation so that we can assist in configuring the room based on the room dimensions, shape, etc. Cleanroom must be installed by a qualified electrician.
How will my colleagues and I be protected from the dangers of UV-C light radiation if it is in a room – is it safe?
Perfectly safe. Cleanroom features a state-of-the-art presence of life detector. When properly positioned and calibrated this detector will sense any life, even if it is not moving, within the room and will immediately shut the UV-C source off, protecting any people from accidental exposure.
How do I operate Cleanroom?
Cleanroom is controlled by our proprietary Smart-Controller. This equipment has been designed for the system and can be either manually operated, or it can be operated and programmed to run disinfection cycles at times and durations of your choosing using the Uvisan app and an Android or Apple tablet. The app connection requires WI-FI.
How do I know if Cleanroom has run its cycle, or whether a cycle was interrupted, e.g. by someone walking into the room before it had finished?
Using the Uvisan app, connected to the Smart-Controller, you can access a record of the time, date, and duration of every cycle, including incomplete cycles.
How long does it take to disinfect a whole room?
As a rule of thumb, 10 minutes should be ample to disinfect a room to 99.99% however different rooms may require longer times depending on their purpose or the ceiling height, the potency of UV-C radiation reduces over distance, so tall ceilinged rooms may require longer cycle time to deliver the correct amount of UV-C energy to every surface. We can advise on cycle duration during the consultation phase.
What maintenance is required?
In a typical installation used daily for say 30 minutes there will be no maintenance required until the bulbs deplete to 90% of their original power, typically this is 4 to 5 years. The bulbs can be replaced in the same way as a standard fluorescent tube.
