Is UV-C Light Safe? Risks, Precautions and What to Look For

 UV-C is one of the most effective tools available for eliminating bacteria, viruses, moulds and spores often within just a couple of minutes of exposure. But that same power that makes it so effective against microorganisms also makes it potentially harmful to people.

Understanding how UV-C works, and what safeguards to insist on, is essential before introducing it into any workplace, healthcare setting, or shared environment.

 What Makes UV-C Dangerous to Humans?

UV-C radiation is not only damaging to microorganisms, direct exposure is also injurious to human health. The risks include:

  • Eye damage: The clear surface of the eye is particularly vulnerable to UV-C wavelengths. As Dr Jesse Sengillo, an ophthalmologist at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Health System, has noted, the cornea is highly susceptible to this specific wavelength of light.
  • Skin damage: UV-C can cause burning to the skin, and research published in Cell Reports has directly linked UV-C rays to DNA mutations that may increase the risk of skin cancer.

These risks do not mean UV-C cannot be used safely, they mean it must be used within properly designed, certified equipment.

 What Is IEC 62471 and Why Does It Matter?

When choosing any UV-C product, always insist on devices that have been tested and certified to IEC 62471 the international standard for photobiological safety.

This rigorous testing confirms that no harmful UV-C radiation escapes the confines of the device during normal operation, and that accidental exposure is prevented by design. Without this certification, there is no reliable guarantee that a product is safe to use around people.

Warning Signs to Watch for in UV-C Products

Not all UV-C products on the market meet adequate safety standards. Before purchasing, check that none of the following apply:

  • The product is not certified to IEC 62471
  • There are vents, gaps or slots in the walls or doors that could allow UV-C radiation to escape  if you can see into the device, UV-C can get out
  • The UV-C source does not automatically shut down when the door is opened, or the device can be operated with the door open
  • The UV-C source generates ozone, which presents a separate risk of lung damage 

Any one of these failings can expose users or staff to harmful UV-C radiation or, in the case of ozone-generating products, to damage to the respiratory system.
